Analyzing Report of the First Series of Webinars for Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education

 

In line with the MOU signed between Kanoon IP and Iran Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME), the first series of webinars

(initial phase) to enhance IP knowledge in the medical and health research sectors conducted by KanoonIP Academy.

 

According to the MOU agenda, the first series had designed to behold in three rounds, starting from May and will last to October. The first training series included 12 topics in the form of 10 educational webinars and two promotional webinars.

The main topics designed for the first phase included: Fundamentals of Intellectual Property; Patentability in the healthcare section; Patent importance in the protection of innovative technologies;  Fundamentals of patent information search; Basics of searching in PATENTSCOPE database;  Basics of searching in LENS database; Overview of PCT System for globally Protection of inventions: potentials and advantages;  The national path for patent protection;  Medicinal Plants, Traditional Knowledge, and Geographical Indications; General paths to extend patent protection outside the country; legal aspects of claims in applications and some national IP legal cases; Moreover introducing Kanoon IP various services/ supports,  and instruction to filing patent applications abroad via Kanoon IP portal were holding besides in each round.

 

In total, As is illustrated in Figure 1, more than 1470 participants attended the first series of the webinars while each subject event had almost 100 attendees.  A total of 1996 training hours were provided to the participants.

 

Analyzing the attendees based on their educational levels as Figure 1 illlustrating, indicates that about 42% of the attendees had a specialized doctorate degree in medical science, and almost 35% had a Master of Science or Ph.D. students. The analysis results also reveal that 45.3% of the attendees were of faculty members of the medical science universities.

Although the webinars have specifically targeted the researchers, scientists, students, and faculty members of the universities, R&Ds, and Research institutes, however,  many participants from startup incubators and science and technology parks which are supervised by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education, participated actively in the webinars, especially in the second and third rounds.

 

In addition to receiving a tumultuous welcome from the participants, analysis results show that a large number of participants were from cities and provinces far from the capital city (Tehran) who did not have normal access to face-to-face courses held by the KanoonIP. To meet the basic IP knowledge requirements of the researchers and innovators from all parts of the country, KanoonIP honored to provide and conducting the online webinars.

Aiming at building IP capacity in Persian language people and increasing public access to IP-related education materials, Kanoon IP academy launched a series of training webinars since late last year in the name of “Tuesdays with IP”. After the COVID-19 outbreaks, when extra attention was drawn to the online courses throughout the globe and Iran, Kanoon IP pursued online webinars more seriously and the seasonal webinars conducted by KanoonIP were welcomed widely by the participants.

The webinars series may continue based on the health sector’s further needs and assessed requirements.
